Garland Farm

Garland Farm is significant to the local community on Mount Desert Island as the final personal home and gardens designed by Beatrix Farrand, the well-known landscape architect [1]. Currently now serving as the home of the Beatrix Farrand Society [2], Garland Farm was entered onto the National Register of Historic Places on October 19, 2005 and includes the “Farrand Wing” of the farmhouse, her gardens, and her greenhouse—all parts of the property where Farrand lived during her time with the Garlands at the end of her life [3].

Beatrix Farrand took interest in plants at a young age, and after several early years of education, travel, and successful commissions [4], she earned her reputation as one of the greatest landscape architects of her time, a reputation which was solidified in 1899 when she became the only woman among the founding members of the American Society of Landscape Architects [5]. Throughout her life, Farrand worked on over 200 landscapes across the nation, with a vast majority of her projects including college campuses or private gardens of families like the Rockefellers [6]. While she worked on over 50 projects on Mount Desert Island, the gardens at Garland Farm are significant because they were her personal gardens during the final years of her life [7]. Farrand lived in Bar Harbor since her childhood at her family’s home, Reef Point, and her later gardens and wing of the Garland house include materials and design features taken from Reef Point [8].

Today, the most intact gardens designed by Farrand are at Garland Farm [9], the McCormick Farm [10], Dumbarton Oaks, Eolia at the Harkness Memorial State Park, and the old campus at Princeton University.
